Sense of place seems to me a very abstract concept. It seems to me that a person’s sense of place has to do with having a home they have customized to fit their needs, within a community they feel attached to. The woman in the video was being picky over the pain on her walls because the color of her home is not a joke. This is the place where she is going to be making memories, where she is going to escape from the world and where she is going to tend to her family. Like that woman, my father is also extremely picky over the paint in my house’s walls. For as long as I can remember, he has made sure to paint every single place we’ve lived in included same two paint colors: Green and beige. This stands for the house in his home town, and even for the living room of our apartment in Bogota (he couldn’t pain the outside so he settled for that.) The two houses we’ve lived in here have carried that same color scheme, and as if it wasn’t enough, one wall is always coral; this is the wall where he usually hangs his paintings. Like the woman in the video, it seems that sense of place comes from adding our personality and tastes to the home. That’s what makes it our home and even details such as paint color or decoration can help us feel right at home no matter where we go.

My sense of place truly stems from the environment I am surrounded by on a daily basis. I often attribute my current mood to the type of ambiance of the space I am in. For example, in my house I often feel tense and frustrated because of the clutter and small spaces. Yet, when I am in Starbucks, which is essentially a second home to me, I feel a sense of calmness. The balanced spacing and warm colors of the coffee shop invites me to sit with a sense of tranquility and peace of mind. Moreover, I understand the woman in the video's particularity on what she wants her different living spaces to look like because I, too, am conscious of the energy a space can create. One of her duties as a housewife is to tend to her family and make sure they are content at all times. By assuring the home looks as nice as possible, she is creating a prosperous and happy environment for her husband and children.

A home for me is somewhere to feel safe and warm. “Home is where the heart is” is a saying that I agree with when it comes to the place where you grew up. Home is the space where you learned to be who you are today it’s where you started out as nothing and became something. It’s a place where you always want to be and have near. A home is always welcoming but chaotic. It’s always familiar and friendly. It’s that place where you can relax and be yourself. It’s a space that like the woman in the video you can change to suit your needs and those who live with you. It’s moldable and changeable. A view of a home is different for everyone such as between the woman and the man she has specific desire for colors and how it should be while the man see’s just yellow, green, blue, and red.

The space in a home helps define a sense of place in that it creates the feeling of belonging, comfort and safety. It is a place where you feel sheltered from the outside world. A home morphs into a cocoon of comfort, where you can be yourself entirely. A home creates a temple of security where you can rest and regain strength, helping develop a strong sense of intimacy and privacy. A home creates a sense of place by allowing you to reveal your true self, allowing you to retreat from the outside world and wear comfortable clothes without being judged. A home is place where memories are kept alive. A home helps provides a sense of perspective, helping shape your basic views of the world and the people that live around you. The physical home reflects social status and mirrors an individual’s success, consequently creating a sense of place and rank within the community. A home is place in the world that you know inside and out; a place that will never feel strange or uncomfortable to you.

I feel the definition of home is different than the definition of a house. A house is just a place that you live at. A home is a place that you can feel safe and loved at. My current home in Illinois is probably the home I know best. My home is located on a fairly busy street. Even though it’s on a busy street it is still fairly quiet at night. Inside my home I feel a sense of safety. At my house I do not feel physically threatened. There is also a sense of warmth literally and emotionally. At home most of the time there is a sense of unity and family although sometimes there are arguments. One of the key things that defines home in my family is the fact that even though my parents are not around all the time due to business travel they still have had a large influence on my life. I feel that they have instilled values on myself and my siblings.

Consider the home you know the best, how does this space help define a sense of place?

This weeks reading to me was an introduction to the development of the city of Winter Park and the early concepts of what the American home contains. I really enjoyed the historical background of how Winter Park came to be mostly because I can go stroll down park ave and view it for myself. I consider the "home" a sanctuary, a haven from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The home is a place carved by the owner for his or her own liking, like the video so eloquently displayed below. As I start to ponder about the uniqueness of personal spaces, I start to realize the idea of what "home" means is what one considers is a place of comfort. A place where one can feel the up most ease and relaxation. It, in many cases, defines who you are or more specifically who you want to be portrayed as, for example: during Christmas every house has a different display of Christmas lights or blow up decorations; some houses have not as many as others. It should absolutely define a "sense of place" for the owner.
